My approach
A child’s autonomy, self-discipline, self-regulation, and collaboration are skills that develop gradually, not challenges that can be quickly “fixed” by simply following the steps from a social media post or a quick in-service training. No hacks or quick strategies will work unless you have a clear understanding of the child’s brain development, and learn how to navigate discipline as a life-long relationship of collaboration and mutual respect, guiding their journey as a prepared leader.
My work with families and caregiver communities is informed by my graduate training in Clinical Psychology and almost a decade of experience supporting children and families using evidenced-based approaches as a licensed psychotherapist and pediatric psychosocial researcher.
My goal is not to just pass on a couple of parenting strategies for a specific challenge but to nurture a research-informed mindset that supports our journey with the young child, and our continued learning beyond our work together. Informed not just by my expertise and experience, but by a personalized approach that considers the unique family, cultural, and school values.
How Montessori fits into Parenting and Emotional Development
Contemporary child development research continuously sheds scientific light on many of the principles Dr. Maria Montessori established over 100 years ago to nurture a child’s self-esteem, confidence, internal motivation, and joy for participation in their environment and culture.
As a behavioral health professional, I consider the Montessori approach a valuable concrete method with powerful tools to bring healthy emotional development into your home—not with specific toys, shelves, or materials, but through awareness of yourself as the most important element in the home to support healthy emotional development. A former Montessori student myself, I now integrate this philosophy and approach as a parent and have obtained formal certification from the Prepared Montessorian Institute for implementing the Montessori philosophy in the home, along with a certification as a Positive Discipline educator.
Caregivers and educators often know that a child will gradually learn how to walk, talk, eat, learn to use the restroom, and more—there is no rushing those steps which the child is following through a unique path. Emotional development is no different, but it challenges us in unique ways as it triggers or interferes with specific aspects of the adult’s life. I incorporate Montessori principles into all my services and learning events, guiding adults through positive discipline and an evidence-based positive parenting approach that considers the prepared adult, the prepared environment, and the child as a capable learner in the process—yes, even when it comes to those tricky moments filled with big emotions and challenging behavior.
